I visited the Na kraji lesa pension near Valašské Meziříčí for a short winter stay. It stands at the end of the road in Podlesí, on the edge of the Beskydy forests, and in 2024 it won the Small Pension category on Amazing Places (a Czech portal of special places to stay). I took away wellness, dinner in the restaurant and a trip to Pustevny and the Stezka Valaška treetop trail.

What is Na kraji lesa and what makes it special?

The pension is connected to a modern restaurant and stands on the site of a former gamekeeper's lodge of the town forests from 1892. Both old buildings were replaced with new ones, but the calm atmosphere was kept. Everything here is cooked and baked only from local ingredients. The capacity is 23 people plus two extra beds in the rooms and suites, each of which is different: from a single room through an attic room to a family suite and a wedding suite with its own entrance and a bathtub.

What is the wellness at the pension like?

Wellness is a big part of the stay. There is an infrared sauna with an adjustable temperature of 45 to 55 °C, a steam herbal sauna, a classic Finnish sauna for up to 15 people at 100 °C and above, a relaxation zone and a cooling tub. Aromatherapy and other massages are also offered. After saunas, the website recommends repeating the procedures two to three times.

What is the Na kraji lesa restaurant like?

We had dinner in the restaurant at oak tables. The menu changes with the season, and I found on it, for example, fried pork cutlet, chicken supreme, svíčková (beef sirloin in a creamy vegetable sauce, a Czech classic) or pork tenderloin. The offer includes meat and meat-free dishes, and upstairs there is a private room for up to 25 guests. I had pheasant, with coloured carrots, creamy purée, herbs and St John's walnuts. The menu changes with the season, and pheasant is no longer on the menu on the website. On the current autumn and winter one you will find, for example, guinea fowl, fried rabbit or duck breast. Better to book a table.

What to do in the area?

The area is for walks, cycling, mushroom picking and fishing, and for cross-country skiing in winter. The ski slope is 1.5 km (1 mile) from the pension. From Valašské Meziříčí it is a short way to the aquapark, tennis and golf, and to Pustevny and the Stezka Valaška, where we went.

  • Pustevny and the Stezka Valaška treetop trail
  • The Beskydy mountains with forests and meadows
  • ski resorts and cross-country trails in winter
  • Valašské Meziříčí: an aquapark, tennis courts, a golf course

My experience

I was here only briefly, and from the area I took away mainly Pustevny and the Stezka Valaška. You can find the reel on my Instagram. The pension has the profile @na_kraji_lesa.
