Vejminek in winter: a wood stove, a guitar and roast chicken with stuffing

Before you start reading, here is the gist
  • Vejminek is a log cottage for 2 to 9 people in Dolní Chřibská and it is always rented as a whole, in winter too.
  • You can drive right up to the cottage, even when there is snow.
  • In the evening we played guitar and ukulele and played games. The kitchen is fully equipped, so cooking is easy.
  • We baked my favourite stuffed chicken here.

I have been to Vejminek in both summer and winter, and I like the cabin best in winter. Snow lies outside, wood crackles in the stove, people cook and play games at the long table, and from the window you can see the whole snowy village. The log cabin from 1843 at the end of Dolní Chřibská is then a completely different place from the mushroom season.

Can you drive to Vejminek in winter?

Yes. You can drive right up to the cabin even when there is snow, and you can park in front of it. In winter just allow extra time, and check the weather and the roads before you set off.

What does Vejminek look like in winter?

Like something from a fairy tale. The log cabin with a wooden roof stands on the edge of the village, with a fence, spruces and deep snow around it, which lies here for days. From the hill above the cabin you can see the whole garden, the pastures and the forests under snow.

What to do in the evening: games, guitar, ukulele

Two things are useful here in the evening: board games and music. At the long table in the main room you can play games, and people play guitar and ukulele, and really any musical instrument you bring with you.

Is it good for cooking here in winter?

Definitely. Vejminek has a fully equipped kitchen, so you can easily bring ingredients and cook as you would at home. We baked my favourite roast chicken with stuffing, and we prepared mushrooms and vegetables for a soup. Then you sit down at the long table for both breakfast and dinner.

What to do during the day?

  • light the Jøtul stove and heat the whole main room in no time
  • walks in the snow around Dolní Chřibská and on the edge of the Bohemian Switzerland National Park (Národní park České Švýcarsko)
  • skiing or cross-country skiing on Jedlová
  • watch something in the evening on a screen with the projector that is in the bedroom
  • walk across the fields to the Na Stodolci restaurant (check the opening hours in winter)

Winter photos can also be found on my Instagram. I describe the summer version, including mushrooms and cows on the pasture, in the main article about Vejminek.

Extra tip

Vejminek is often fully booked. Keep an eye on mátevolno

This is my personal trick for cottages you normally cannot get. The portal mátevolno.cz collects dates at exceptional places that have freed up at the last minute, and it offers them for the next 14 days ahead.

  • Filtrujete podle typu (roubenky, chalupy, glamping), vybavení i toho, jestli berete psa.
  • Rezervujete rovnou online, bez navolávání majitelům.
  • Mají i newsletter s ručně vybranými tipy, jeden e-mail týdně.
Take a look at mátevolno.cz
