I have stayed at Hotel Kouty in both summer and winter. I spent the winter weekend from Friday 7 to Sunday 9 February 2025 in the LYKKE forest cabin. The grounds lie at the edge of a pond below the Melechov hill in Vysočina, and in winter the place is quiet, frosty and very romantic. The hotel is also listed on the Czech portal of special places to stay, Amazing Places.

What does the LYKKE cabin look like in winter?

The cabin stands in the forest under the trees, you get a wooden key engraved LYKKE and you go straight to light the stove. Inside there is an open space with a small table, a stove and a big window onto the forest, and you sleep upstairs at the top of the cabin under wooden panelling.

Hygge cabin: another of the forest cabins

I did not stay in Hygge, but it is another of the forest cabins at Hotel Kouty. It is a cosy cabin with a fireplace for four people. Upstairs there is a double bed from the Hastens brand, and downstairs its own bathroom and kitchenette.

The hotel highlights the crackling fire in the fireplace, floorboards that are a hundred and fifty years old and a gramophone with a few records. Outside, a cedar hot tub belongs to the cabin, and on request they will bring breakfast to your door (it must be ordered in advance by 18:00 for the following day, and costs 50 CZK (about EUR 2) per person).

A sauna by the frozen pond

The biggest winter draw is the wellness. The cedar sauna has a round window, and while you warm up you look out at the frozen pond. A wooden "sauna" signpost leads to it through the forest, and after the sauna comes the hot tub with hot water, where you can drink tea.

Prosecco by the fire on the frozen pond

At sunset we lit a fire in the fire pit by the frozen pond and put a bucket of ice with a bottle of prosecco next to it, which you can buy at the hotel. In winter in the forest you need nothing else.

What else in winter?

  • swimming in the pond is possible here all year round, but in winter it is more for those who like cold water
  • walks in the snowy forests, or cycling or cross-country skiing around Melechov
  • dinner in the hotel restaurant
  • the cedar sauna and the hot tub after a day outside

The hotel has 20 rooms and ten forest cabins. One of the other cabins is an A-frame on stilts, with a red door and a terrace.
