Czechia | Hotel Kouty: cabins by a pond in Vysočina

Hotel Kouty is one of the places I went back to. I stayed in the LYKKE cabin, and the second time with a group of friends in the Forest Garden Family and Romance cottages. The accommodation is in the forest, at the edge of a pond below the Melechov hill, and on Amazing Places (a Czech portal of special places to stay) it is listed as glamping.

What is Hotel Kouty and what makes it special?

The forest cabins stand under huge trees, the path to them is lined with fairy lights, inside there is an open space with a kitchenette and a sofa, and you sleep right at the top of the cabin. Everything built here is in harmony with the surrounding nature. There are ten cabins with four to six beds each in the grounds, plus 20 hotel rooms.

The special thing is the cedar sauna that bobs on the surface of the pond, which you can swim in all year round. The grounds cover 100,000 m² of peace and have almost no mobile signal, but there is wifi. They say you will use the kitchenette in the cabin only for tea and coffee, because the chef cooks well in the hotel restaurant.

What can you do here?

the cedar sauna on the surface of the pond
paddleboards, a small boat and swimming in the pond
cycling, cross-country skiing or walks in the surrounding forests and hills
tennis, beach volleyball and a children's playground
fishing in the private pond, with fishing permits collected at reception by arrangement

Do they extract honey at Kouty?

Yes. At Kouty they extract honey and sell it as Koutecký med (Kouty honey), so you can see the honeycombs, the extractor and finally the jars. I tried uncapping the combs myself and took one jar of honey home.

My experience

In 2023 there was an Amazing Places event here with a test of Specialized bikes, and I have a reel and a post from it on Instagram. I came back for a weekend in the LYKKE cabin (reel) and a second time with a group of friends (reel). The place has its own profile, @hotelkouty.

How far is it from Kouty to Lipnice Castle?

From Kouty we cycled to Lipnice nad Sázavou castle. According to a route planner it is about 12.5 km (8 miles) one way on roads from the hotel, and the ride takes around 20 minutes. Lipnice Castle was founded around 1310 by the Lichtenburk family, and the first written mention is from 1314. The village is worth a visit too: Jaroslav Hašek spent the last months of his life here and wrote a large part of The Good Soldier Švejk (a classic Czech satirical novel) here.

Besides an English park with ponds, Světlá nad Sázavou chateau has some interesting residents. From what I saw there, they keep exotic birds, for example a golden pheasant with a red chest and a yellow crest.
