The Na Kmíně guesthouse in Obříství near Mělník is a family farmstead not far from Prague, about 20 minutes from the city. I was here as a guest of the Czech portal Amazing Places: I stayed overnight, tried the food in the bistro, and the next day we made a trip to a nearby chateau. The guesthouse is a great space for events, they hold weddings here, and above all the food is excellent. Amazing Places named it the best guesthouse of 2022 and the wedding venue of 2024.

What is the history of the Na Kmíně farmstead?

The history is the reason the guesthouse has the name it has. The owner's great-grandfather, Ing. Jiří Havelka, bought the estate in Obříství in 1925, with a chateau, two hundred hectares of forest and a farm. He took out a loan for the purchase and paid it off by starting to grow caraway (kmín, which gives the place its name). After 1948 came nationalisation (the communist takeover of private property), the family had to emigrate, and the farm returned to the descendants only through restitution. Today's owner Denisa Kubálková had to buy back the other half. Denisa farms 300 hectares of her own fields at the farm and is gradually repairing the farmstead so that people feel good here again.

What is Na Kmíně and what makes it special?

The Na Kmíně guesthouse is rated 4* Superior and combines a rustic style with elegance. Accommodation is in 14 stylish suites, for up to 37 guests in total. Every room is furnished differently, all are bright and cosy, some even with a deer blanket in the attic. There is a children's corner under the stairs. At reception and in the rooms you will find the natural cosmetics Moroccane Sense.

What about the food and the bistro?

I tasted the food here and it is cooked superbly. In the bistro the chefs from Street Catering work their magic, a collaboration between the guesthouse and that kitchen. Breakfasts are a buffet and are included in the price of the stay. The bistro is open according to the season (in summer daily from 8 to 21, in winter for shorter hours, and it is closed in January). Before you visit, it is better to call and book a table.

I tried bowls, crispy chips, mini burgers, starters in small glasses and, with them, Parigot sparkling wine. In the courtyard there is also an old mobile food truck, which is handy for outdoor events.

Is Na Kmíně good for weddings and events?

Definitely. For weddings there is a spacious barn that holds up to 300 guests (smaller weddings from 35). The ceremony can be in the garden, in front of the barn or in a nearby deconsecrated church. Accommodation with breakfast is for 31 guests, and the guesthouse also rents out wedding decorations. For companies there are team-building events, training or accommodation for business partners, and the yoga hall can be hired too.

Where to go on a trip from Na Kmíně?

The next day we went to Liblice chateau, which is close by. The Baroque chateau from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries now serves as a hotel and conference centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences and has a large park with a pond, which is good for a walk. According to the information available, the park is freely accessible, but check the current opening hours before you visit.

  • Kokořínsko: rocks and forests for hiking
  • Veltrusy: a large chateau park
  • Obříství: the Smetana Memorial, the church and a walk to the old Elbe weir

I filmed it, and you can find the reel on Instagram. The guesthouse has its own profile, @na_kmine.
