The Nový Rybník pension and brewery in Obořiště near Dobříš is not far from Prague, so you can get there by car very quickly. We were there in cooperation with Amazing Places (a Czech portal of special places to stay) and we had a borrowed electric Volvo. The place is connected with the Baštýř microbrewery, stands right below the pond dam and is a big space that also suits company events or weddings.
What is Nový Rybník and what makes it special?
It is a reconstructed historic building of a fishermen's bastion (bašta) on the bank of the pond of the same name. The pension has 14 rooms with 40 beds in total, its own restaurant, a pub, wellness and a spacious grounds with a beach volleyball court, table tennis and a children's corner. It stands in isolation below the dam, and right behind it are the Brdy forests. The pier on the pond is also a wedding spot.
What is the accommodation like?
I slept in the wedding suite right at the top. It is huge, in the attic, with beams, an extra large bed and a freestanding bath. We opened prosecco as a welcome and it was clear at once that I would sleep well here. The pension also has single and double rooms, a wheelchair-accessible room, a four-bed suite and an Exclusive suite.
What are the restaurant and the breakfast like?
The pension has a restaurant open all year round for 70 guests and a pub with 20 to 30 seats. They cook traditional Czech cuisine, made-to-order dishes and small bites to go with beer, the cooks grow herbs in the garden in summer, and there are homemade lemonades to drink. I really liked the food. I had meat on vegetables and pasta, and both were great.
The biggest surprise was the breakfast, and I was delighted with it. They had my favourite vejce do skla (eggs served in a glass) and also soft-boiled eggs, which at home we call "knock-knock eggs" because you have to tap them to get to them.
What is Baštýř and what is the brewery tour like?
The Baštýř brewery was created during the reconstruction of the pension in 2013, and the name was chosen by a public competition. The permanent offer is Baštýř 10° pale draught beer, 11° semi-dark lager and 12° pale lager, plus a non-alcoholic beer and a speciality in summer. The beers are unfiltered and unpasteurised. You can also buy them to take away.
In the cellar the beer really is brewed, bottled and labelled. I arranged a tour, the brewer showed us around and showed us the tanks, we tasted, and upstairs you can also see the copper brewing kettles. According to the website the tour costs from 200 CZK (about EUR 8) per person and has to be arranged in advance. There is also a Baštýř tasting set to try.
Can I rent a boat?
Yes. On the pond you can go out in a rowing boat or a pedal boat. We had the boat for free, but it is better to ask about the price on the spot. You can also rent a paddleboard for 200 CZK (about EUR 8) per hour. You have to row yourselves, and we took a small bottle of prosecco to make it more fun.
Is there wellness and massage?
The wellness at the pension is really big. There is a Finnish sauna by the hour for a private group (according to the website from 300 CZK (about EUR 12) per half hour for 1 to 2 people), wooden tubs and healing baths: a beer bath with yeast, a Dead Sea salt bath and a Cleopatra bath of oil, cream and rose. A bath costs from 900 to 1,100 CZK (about EUR 36 to 44) for one person, lasts 25 minutes and is followed by relaxation. Massages, including a hot stone massage, are booked in advance. You will find current prices on the pension's website.
Is there somewhere to walk or run?
The area around the pond and the Brdy forests are great for walks. I went for a run there: I took my running shoes and set off. I ran a route of about 3 km along a field track that leads straight from the pension. And after the run you can do a warm-up on the pier.
Can I hold a wedding or a company event there?
Definitely. Nový Rybník is suitable for weddings (they have a wedding package called "Den D", D-Day), company events, training and celebrations. The restaurant with 70 seats can handle a wedding feast, and the pub is for smaller events.
What is nearby?
- The Brdy hills and their forests right behind the pond
- the chateau and the small town of Dobříš
- The Dlouhá Lhota estate and a chateau hotel nearby
- marked hiking and cycling trails in the area
