I visited Hotel Ryzlink in Mikulov in July and arrived there in a Volvo S90. It is a winery hotel linked with the Fučík winery below Holy Hill (Svatý kopeček), so wine turns up here at every step. The hotel is also on Amazing Places (a Czech portal of special places to stay).

The hotel was created by a sensitive reconstruction of an old farmstead. The architecture studio Létající inženýři (Flying Engineers) built the original beams, bricks and attic boards into it and combined them with a modern style. The rooms are named after grape varieties, so you feel less like you are in a hotel and more like you are living in a winery. On arrival a welcome drink of the best local wines awaits, and in the room a bottle of wine from Fučík.

What is the room like?

I had an attic apartment with a wooden ceiling, a long table made of beams and a sofa. The rooms and apartments are furnished with solid wooden furniture made from old beams, handmade by an art woodcarver. There is also a royal apartment with a terrace.

Wine baths and wellness

The biggest experience is the wine bath. In private wooden tubs made by the Fryzelka cooperage, you bathe in real grapes: skins, seeds and wine yeast from local vineyards are mixed with essential oils and Dead Sea salt. No wine essences or fragrances are used here. You can choose a relaxing, detoxifying, regenerating or family wine bath. There is also a Finnish sauna or a wine bio-sauna, and a hot tub under the stars with a view of Holy Hill.

Where do you eat here?

The Ryzlink restaurant works with a grill, salads and seasonal specialities. With wine they serve Moravian tapas: homemade pâtés, pork crackling spreads, wine sausage made with Rulandské šedé (Pinot Gris) and charcuterie from the butcher Hakala. The restaurant is among the gastronomic best in Mikulov and is listed among the places recommended by Gault & Millau, which praises, for example, the beef tartare with truffle mayonnaise or the "Holanďák" made from veal leg by head chef Kamila Král.

Holy Hill and Pálava by bike

Holy Hill with its white chapel and bell tower is a few minutes' walk from the hotel, so you can head up in the morning before breakfast. We walked up in the morning as if for a stroll, and at the top you see over Mikulov and across the Pálava hills. Pálava is also ideal for cycling: the paths around the vineyards are safe and suit any fitness level.
